dc: I typically stay away from penny stocks or the pink sheets because of that reason. There's way too much manipulation going on there.

The SEC only looks out for big money and really is a bloated governmental agency. I worry about that.

hi tom
well in the old days we were foolish enough to think the SEC was looking out for the small invester. So if you saw unussaul volume trading in a stock you assumed it would go up,or if it didn;t it was probably being shorted and you would get a little short squeeze sooner or later.(assuming the SEC was doing it's job)So earlly 2003, since the whole market was being shorted into the ground i decided to load up on heavilly shorted penny stocks with a small float that had a product and that looked legit.(not easy to find) I got into 5 short sqeeze candidates/ stocks looking for the short squeeze. This is the last one of the 5 where the ceo did'nt reverse split the stock yet.The others stocks ceo's chickened out and reverse split allready.OH WELL, NO SQEEZE ON THE 4 ( one to go.Is this the diamond in the rough?)

There are alot of scams with alot of crooked CEO's
TYPES OF PENNY STOCK SCAMS
1) THE CROOKED CEO AND NAKED SHORTERS DREAM COMPANY
this is the most common one it's when you have a company without a product and a crooked ceo that pumps the stock with a news release for a day or two .Sometimes it's true/real news or it's just future hype/outlook which is mostly lies.He does this(pump) so that he can sell shares into the run. Then after he does his pump the share price usually goes down ,but he made his money selling shares on the way up that's all he cares about. (it;s called the pump and dump)To top it off or rub salt into the wound, if the float is getting large 1billion or over what he does is something called a reverse split. In other words he takes the float of lets say 1 billion shares and does a 20 to 1 reverse split.
so now a stock selling at .01 with 1 billion share float gets reverse split 20 to 1
becomes a stock selling at .20 cents with 50 million share float.Which plays in perfectly for the naked shorting crowd because the ones that shorted at .01 had a hard time getting out at a lower price. Now not only they have 20 times less naked short shares to worry about(which they could have naked shorted shares 3to5 times the current float)but they have a new higher price to start shorting from to bring it back down to that .01 level again."THIS TYPE OF CEO IS THE NAKED SHORTERS DREAM CEO"( I'm surprised he doesn't ask for a kick back from the naked shorting crowd). This process of reverse splitting may happen as much as twice a year.Which totally wipes out the original shareholders that bought in the begining.(Just keep deviding 100k by 20 and you'll see how many shares you are left with after a while.Especially if theyr'e naked shorted back down to .01 over and over) OUCH !!!

2)THIS IS THE CASH COW COMPANY
it's where a company has a product that's in development all the time but the ceo never releases it out on the market, but gives himself a very large salary of lets say 500k.So to pay for the overhead (which he happens to be the biggest expense) he sells shares to the market quite often and reverse splits once a year to once every other year depending on the share price.Just living a nice comfortable life in the suburbs somewhere.THERE WILL NEVER BE A PRODUCT RELEASE JUST A GOOD SALARY AND THE SHAREHOLDERS PICK UP THE TAB (OUCH!!!)

Now you see what 50to60 percent of the otc and pink sheet companies are like.
The other 40% or so seem to be legit. At least the ceo makes an attempt at being legit ,but with all the naked shorting going on they sooner or later give up, and
in order to stay alive they also start selling shares to pay for overhead. They may try financing but if their shareprice is to low it's hard to find. UNLESS THEY HAVE SOMETHING THE BANK SEE'S OF VALUE
So if the company that's looking for a loan has excellent intellectual property (VALUE) or even if they are a mining company and sitting on prime real estate(VALUE) they have to watch out for hostile takeovers. Especially with all the naked shares out in the market or various financing where they put up a certain amount of shares against the loan.If the loan is set on a SHARE PRICE at which the shares are going to convert instead of an AMOUNT OF DOLLAR VALUE that they are going to convert at.They should be ok.But if the latter(AMOUNT OF DOLLAR VALUE) They may wind up with hostile takeover problems The loan bank (shark in this case) can short to bring the price down in order to wind up with more shares during the conversion.Thereby becoming majority share holder and takeover your company, and all it's intellectual proporty or in the case of a mining company the mineral rights /claims.

SO HOW MANY COMPANIES ON THE OTC,PINKS ARE SCAMS AND HOW MANY ARE LEGIT AND TRY TO MAKE AN HONEST GO OF IT? THE NAKED SHORTING CROWD WILL SAY "THEY'RE ALL SCAMS AND DESERVE TO GO OUT OF BUISNESS". WE SAY "QUIT NAKED SHORTING EVERY COMPANY INTO THE GROUND TO THE POINT OF DRIVING THEM OUT OF BUISNESS,(except the 1 and 2 examples) AND WE'LL FIND OUT. ESPECIALLY IF THE SEC STARTS TO DO IT'S JOB" .( but maybe that's in some perfect world somewhere)

P.S.To the SEC if it's listening "HELLO" >> if a company's ceo reports to you that he is being naked shorted and you don't investigate you are aiding and abetting the criminal naked shorter, that's eventually, going to undermine this countries economic future.
Since you know that the big companies sooner or later will out-source the majority of america's jobs thru globalization then these small companies(that are being naked shorted) will be the only place where the new jobs will come from IF THEY'RE NOT KILLED OFF BY NAKED SHORTING. So why aren't you doing your job and investigating
these claims(naked shorting) before this nation becomes a second world country.
"HELLO"

dc: Are you trading diamond mine pink shares now? :)

matt: I get such a low beta because I've instituted lots of risk measures that help me reduce my risk overall but keep my performance intact. I'm typically 95% in stocks but I rotated money out last December to 60% stocks, now I'm easing back into the market :)

That's what I have Tom, a 95% stock, 5% cash/bond holding. Although I'm 20 years old so I'm not to worried about being heavily invested in stocks at the moment. I'm not sure how old you are Tom, but a .79 beta seems extremely low - again depending on how old you are/how far away from retirement you are. Right now my beta sits at around 2-2.5, which is high relative to the S&P500, but I feel it's justified given the number of years I still have to invest and the quality of the companies I'm investing in. As of right now I only have 1 short term trade in my portfolio and that is SIRI. The rest are all long term 5, 10, or maybe 20 year holdings that I will be adding to over the years. This is a buyers market, with the way interest rates are right now I wish I could buy a home, by the time I graduate college these rates will be higher then they were before the housing crash. It kind of sucks, young investors often see the mistakes of their older counterparts, and have to suffer the consequences of their actions. I say long live the bull market, and long live capitalism!

Hi Tom
Ahhh long term investing might be the ticket ( maybe, i still like trading better)
Well if i had one of those 10 million accounts where i do count(considered by the broker as one of their top clients) and was on one of those insider info/rumor networks where you know who is doing what, and when, and then all you have do is hop on for the ride, and your making money. Then and only then the word “INVESTING”(the old crony way) might seem interesting to me.(But i can’t seem to get invited to join that club, hmmm i guess it must be because i don’t have a 10 million account) As a small time investor your probably wondering how can you ever get to that level.

TO WHO EVER
THE USSUAL BEGINERS ROAD IS THRU TRIAL AND ERROR (hopefully he’s a quick learner) HERE’S A LITTLE ANALOGY
“INVESTING” Well, it’s sort of like you see this lake (lets call it wall street lake ) and you park your car, you get out,and you take a stroll along it’s nice sandy bank throwing some rocks(investing some small play money) in the water to amuse yourself. Then comes the thought what if i get serious and commit some real money, maybe i will make myself rich and retire and live happily ever after.(i heard that before) So you wade in up to your ankles,(invested 10k with a broker in a sure thing) .But then you take a good look at the water and you notice it’s really murky and dirty to the point where you you can’t see your feet .You look around and there is no one in sight (unless there is another sure thing your broker says to invest in) and your getting this uneasy feeling.Just then something bites you on your big toe .You reach down and it’s this 10 inch alligator that just drew a little blood (you just lost 5k on your first sure investment) no real damage you think to yourself wade in a little further up to your knees(you invested 10k into another sure thing)Just then and there you see this huge head rise from under the water 100 feet away and looks at you as if you were it’s lunch, and it dawns on you this lake is full of alligators, and you run screaming for the shore probably breaking the 50 yard dash.
“YOU ARE ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES” (because there are some real horror stories)

HOW DO YOU GET TRANSPARANCY IN ALL THIS MURKY WATER
The word “”INVESTOR”HAS BECOME THE EQUIVELENT TO THE WORD “SUCKER”"on wall street. The shares that most SMALL investors(there is a definate distinction between small and big) buy on the OTC,pinks and even IN SOME HEAVELEY SHORTED COMPANIES on the bigger exchanges are nothing more then markers not real shares. In fact if you were to ask for certs they would try to discourage you from ever getting them ,or beat around the bush as to why they can’t deliver them.We know if they were lent out for shorting purposes the broker gets a percentage on the transaction, and he’s not even intersted in keeping your shares in your account. For the most part it seems that all they do is pocket your money and put in markers in your account so it looks legit. With a thank you very much it was nice taking your money aditude. Then add to that the constant/blatant shorting, and you have some of the murkiest sesspool you can ever imagine happening before your very eyes.(those alligators are eating well)
Since the SEC doesn’t want to do anything about these problems .It seems the small investor has to fend for himself Here is another attempt at trying to force accounabillity from the market, that constantly disregards the small investors rights.
THE NEXT ATTEMPT AT FIGHTING AGAINST FTD’S AND NAKED SHORTING

P.S.>FOR ALL YOU DIE-HARD LONG TERM INVESTORS Recently(1 to1.5 years ago) Buffet invested/bought majority ownership in a company(i think it was public/trade-able) with about 40+ subsidiaries.Assuming we do have a bull market in the future. Up to 10 of those companies could be new IPO candidates. NOW YOU KNOW WHY HE’S A BILLIONAIRE
