File this under cool and also a bit weird. Walmart has filed a patent for autonomous robotic bees. These 'bees' can fly around a field and pollinate plants. This is one of six agricultural patents they've filed in recent history.

The thing that’s so puzzling about this move is: why Walmart? (via WeForum)

Yes it is puzzling but as the article goes on to say, it's probably related to Walmart's emerging grocery delivery service. I completely get the idea that you have to be innovative to stay on top and Walmart is definitely feeling pressure from Amazon, but maybe they could be a leader in 'real' bee colony research. Spend your time doing both autonomous robot bee research AND helping real bees survive and thrive in the future. People like me would consider Walmart to be a good corporate citizen then.
